Slave Trader and Slave Coffle

Depiction of mulatto slave traders transporting captives from the interior.

Afro-Portuguese, Afro-British, and Afro-French slave traders constituted a unique social class. They wanted unrestricted trade and opposed, sometimes violently, the monopolies of the European companies. Some were educated in Europe, and the slave trade made their families wealthy.
