“Negroes' Contract," pamphlet, 1739

In 1518 the Spanish friar Las Casas persuaded Spain's monarch to allow Africans to be brought as slaves into the Spanish colonies. This resulted in the asiento, which allowed nations to ship people directly from Africa to Spain's colonies in the Americas.
