To Atlanta, the New Promised Land

Between 1947 and 1972, the central cities of the thirty-three most populous metropolitan areas lost 880,000 manufacturing jobs. During the 1970s alone, the northern economy lost more than 700,000 manufacturing jobs. Pictured here, Corey Blackmon, a twenty-five-year-old carpet layer in Benton Harbor, hopes to escape the economic hardships facing the city's residents by moving to Atlanta.
