African-American migrants changed the urban North and were also changed by it. As they retired, they sometimes found themselves isolated, their children and grandchildren having moved to other cities or states, often in the South. The nostalgia for familiar surroundings and the sense of community that the South provides led many to leave their adopted cities and go back home.
