Toussaint L'Ouverture was responsible for the only successful slave revolt in the world. It led to the establishment of the first black republic and the second independent country in the Americas. In Little Haiti, the predominantly Haitian neighborhood in Miami, elementary school students dress up as Toussaint L'Ouverture to commemorate Haitian Independence Day.
