The river that separates Haiti from the Dominican Republic is a familiar route of migration. There has long been a tradition of Haitians crossing the border illegally by choice or under duress to work the labor-intensive crops on the Dominican side of the island of Hispaniola. Some of the women with baskets cross the river to engage in commerce at the market in Dajabón, in the Dominican Republic.
