Since its independence from France, Haiti has been vilified. In the early nineteenth century, there was widespread fear that the slave revolt would spread to other parts of the slaveholding world. After slavery was abolished in the Americas, negative stereotyping continued with cartoons such as these depicting Haitian people in a degrading way.
