The first sailboat of refugees was returned by U.S. authorities in 1963, and many others were subsequently sent back to Haiti. Back on Haitian soil, the refugees were processed at centers, such as this one, at the airport. The political turmoil was such that many, if not all, refugees who were returned forcibly to Haiti by the U.S. Coast Guard faced brutal persecution.
