While the vast majority of undocumented Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic are involved in the dangerous and difficult work of harvesting sugarcane, the Dominican coffee industry relies heavily on Haitian labor as well. The political and economic situation in Haiti is such that the nation, once prosperous for its sugarcane and coffee production, now has more citizens working across the border than on Haitian soil. Most Dominicans are unwilling to work the grueling jobs that Haitians fill, and with the recent deportation of undocumented Haitians by the Dominican government, coffee and sugarcane plantations find it difficult to hire substitute labor.
