Just as Haitian Americans fight prejudice for themselves and their countrymen who wish to immigrate, Haitians in the Dominican Republic face equal or greater prejudice. Until recently undocumented Haitians were denied birth certificates for children born there. In addition to the continuing prejudice against children of Haitian descent, the lack of birth certificate prevented them from attending school past the fifth grade.
