Mahala Murchinson, Texas
Ms. Murchinson arrived in Austin, Texas, with her owners in 1839. She was the first person of African descent registered in the city. Six months later, there were 176 African Americans in Austin. They had either come with white migrants or had been taken there by speculators. It is estimated that 30 to 40 percent of the African Americans who were transported to the Lower South followed slaveholders relocating to new lands.
