The Mounting Violence

The 1874 election campaign was particularly brutal. African Americans throughout the South were threatened, harassed, and brutalized; many were wounded or killed. Democrats found ways to prevent them from voting, using fraud, intimidation, poll tax requirements, suffrage disqualification, and other schemes.
