A new professional elite developed during the migration. It was made up of men and sometimes women who achieved status by virtue of their education and training but were not always socially accepted by the old elites who had once dominated. In the healthcare professions, the migration produced a number of black hospitals and healthcare facilities. By the mid 1920s, there were over two hundred black hospitals and over twenty-five nursing schools in the country.
