The most common means of transportation to the North was the train. Also used were ferries from Norfolk, Virginia to New York and New England. Automobiles were just beginning to be made available to the masses in the early 1920s. A few lucky migrants came north by car. Others were able to take advantage of new businesses created because of the migration boom, such as moving companies.
