Jean-Baptiste Debret, Voyage pittoresque et historique au Brésil (1965 facsimile of 1834 original)

African Women

At first, many more African women arrived in the Americas than European women, and therefore African women were crucial to the demographic growth of the continents. Because of this imbalance, it is likely that many of the first generation born in the New World had African mothers. Most of the women sketched by Jean-Baptiste Debret in this lithograph were originally from Congo and Angola.
