The Rhone Family in Wyoming

The far western territories represented a chance for both greater personal freedom and enhanced economic opportunity. Although racial hostility often followed the rush for land, federal homestead laws were race-blind. The federal government allowed anyone who could pay a filing fee and develop a farm or town site to settle on public lands.
