Six people were killed and 185 injured in Harlem after a white policeman shot a black soldier who had intervened during the arrest of a black woman. Close to 500 people were injured and as many were arrested. New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia attempted to address some of the grievances of the African-American community and reduce racial tensions in the city.
