Initiated by African-American physician and political leader Martin R. Delany, this gathering was held in August 1854 at the Congressional Church in Cleveland, Ohio. The purpose of the convention was to discuss the futility of African Americans pursuing equality within the United States and to structure a plan that would facilitate immigration to a country where blacks represented a majority of the population.
