Akwamu

An Akan kingdom founded in the sixteenth century, located in what is now southern Ghana and Togo. Akwamu developed an important plantation sector, using slave labor, and also sold captured prisoners of war into the transatlantic slave trade. Akwamu was defeated in 1730 by the kingdom of Akyem, an ally of Asante, and much of its territory was depopulated, people fleeing or being sold into slavery.
