In 1965, with the passage of the Social Security Amendments, Medicare, a national health insurance program for people age sixty-five or older and for the disabled, was established. Recipients of Medicare receive health insurance that protects against the major cost of hospitalization and related care. In addition, Medicare provides enrollees with supplementary medical insurance that subsidizes doctor bills and other health-care charges. In 2002 roughly 40.5 million Americans had Medicare.
