The Fon kingdom in the modern country of Benin, founded in the early eighteenth century, and rising to fame through the conquest of the Kingdom of Allada in 1724 and the slave port of Whydah in 1727. For the next one hundred years, Dahomey was tributary to the Yoruba Kingdom of Oyo, but nonetheless was a major source of captives for sale to the Americas as slaves.
