A Hard Place

Many migrants, particularly the elderly, sought the milder climate of the South after years spent facing the harsh winters of northern cities such as Chicago. In a 1973 survey of return migrants to Birmingham, Alabama, almost 12 percent cited "health and climate" as factors influencing their decision to move.
