One of the most cited reasons for African-American return migration to the South was to care for aging relatives. In a 1973 survey of return migrants to Birmingham, Alabama, 12 percent said they migrated to care for an ill or aging parent or relative. Elderly migrants also returned to former homes and reunited with family to receive care or to spend a more relaxing retirement.
