After experiencing decades of exodus, rural areas of the South started to retain their residents and attract new ones in the 1970s. Many migrants were returning to rural homeplaces. While only 16 percent of northern and western migrants settled outside the cities and suburbs, 45 percent of return migrants ended up in the rural South.
