Francophone West African vendors have become ubiquitous in large cities, notably in New York. They first started selling their goods in the early 1980s from pieces of fabric laid out on the pavement and were involved in many disputes with the police and store owners. Today, most have permits, tables, displays, and vans, like this vendor, whose business, "Cayor" - the name appears on the van door - bears the name of a region of Senegal that is home to numerous Senegalese immigrants.
