This broadside condemning the sale and ownership of slaves in the nation's capital denounced the domestic slave trade. It juxtaposed the Declaration of Independence in the Land of the Free with a coffle passing the Capitol. Slave pens in Virginia and Washington, D.C., enchained people coming out of a slave trader's house; and the loading of slaves onto a ship are among the scenes illustrated in this abolitionist tract. It also shows the infamous Franklin & Armfield slave prison (located on Duke Street in Alexandria, Virginia), from which in the 1830s many thousands of enslaved people were sent, mostly by sea, to New Orleans.
