Sale of a Free Man

Although many accounts of slavery focus on conditions in the Deep South, life for African Americans living in the Upper South was also fraught with danger. In Maryland and other states of the region, free blacks who could not pay their debts or who were convicted of even petty crimes could be sold into slavery.
