Freed People in Maryland

Many free African Americans remained in Southern states, but they tended to settle in large cities where their movements were more difficult to control. Baltimore had the largest free black population in the South, and it increased sharply after the Civil War. Cities like Charleston, Richmond, and New Orleans also had substantial free black communities.
